Pre-Wedding Necessities

It’s easy to get caught up in planning the honeymoon or ordering the cake — but first, it’s smart to take care of the essential legal stuff. If you're having a destination wedding in Colorado, make sure you understand the state’s marriage license requirements.

To obtain a Colorado marriage license, you typically need to:

  1. Apply in person (or virtually in some counties): Most counties require at least one party to appear in person at the Clerk & Recorder’s office, though some allow video appointments.
  2. Meet the age requirement: You must be 18 or older to marry without parental or court permission. Applicants aged 16–17 need a court order in many counties.
  3. Show valid ID: Acceptable forms include a driver’s license, passport, military ID, or other government-issued photo ID.
  4. Provide Social Security information: You’ll need your SSN; if you don’t have one, some counties require you to complete an affidavit.
  5. Use the license within 35 days: Once issued, the license is valid for 35 days.
  6. Return the signed license for recording: After the ceremony, you or your officiant must return the completed certificate to the Clerk & Recorder’s office (often within 63 days) for legal recording.
  7. No need for witnesses: Colorado allows self-solemnization, so you don’t need a separate officiant or witnesses if you don’t want one.
